The Potential of Renewable Energy in Somaliland and Somalia

The growth of the renewable energy market is accompanied by interest on the part of Somali governments for development of the renewable energy sector. Investing in renewable energy is a part of the 2014–2015 Economic Recovery Plan produced by the Somali Federal Government. In Puntland, the government listed renewable energy as one of four key priorities for the economy in its 2014–2016 plan. In its five-year plan, the Puntland government outlines a target of a 20 percent increase in the use of solar and wind energy over five years. The Somaliland government has progressed the furthest with some help from international organizations. It produced an energy policy in 2010 and has completed a policy dialogue series bringing together stakeholders to outline goals and shared concerns.

The Importance of Business Development Services

Internationally, many academic and project writings on BDS has been produced and published but there is a little or no literature on the BDS in the Somali regions and consequently the demand for BDS is very low among local micro-small and medium enterprises.  Although many business development services providers are exist, the quantity, quality and relevance of the services they provide is far below to overcome the problems in MSMEs sector. The BDS market in the Somali regions is not regulated and is not well developed to be able to effectively overcome the existing gaps of Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) development. For that case, many Micro, Small and Medium enterprises (MSMEs) fail to grow whereas many of them are shut down when they experience in gradual lost. There are many successful business ideas generated by Somali entrepreneurs but lacks investment due  afraid of cheating and copying by competitors land there are business development services that could help entrepreneurs cope with such risk as well as differentiate their production and service delivery, their business idea will no longer beneficial. Somali people are currently suffer a very low economy growth and huge unemployment and poverty constraints. Although the private sector is growing and making tremendous development, the private sector is characterized traditional management style and techniques that do not fully support its growth and expansion. It is very rare to find small and medium enterprise that utilizes the basic financial management tools, marketing, book keeping, market research, risk management etc. It is internationally agreed that small and medium enterprises create most employment opportunities in the third world countries as well as many developed countries. Therefore, the Somali Entrepreneurs Initiative is intended to promote that SMEs in the Somali regions have access to investment or financing opportunities, business technological services, market information, skilled labor force, and specialized BDS providers. This page will publish scholar writings related to BDS.
